Research Blog: Music Videos Conventions and Codes

My group is doing a pop song for our music video. In most pop genre music videos, the audience

usually watches people sing the lyrics to the song within the video. A lot of things are subject to the

meaning or theme of the song and how the artist wants to get that across within the music video

• They usually wear costumes that go with the theme of the music video , so for example if the

theme of the video involves them performing for a crowd they usually wear nice clothing like

dresses, suits, etc. If the theme is midcentury, they usually wear old style clothing like knight

armor, long skirts, etc. If the theme is casual, they wear casual clothing like t shirts, jeans, shorts,

and sneakers.

• Props are also usually subject to the theme of the video. If they are performing in the music

videos they might have microphones, a microphone stand, and a stage. If it's more midcentury

them some props used could be a horse.

• The appearance of the people within the music video are also usually subject as well. If the song

falls under the emotional, sad category you might see people in the music video who appear to be

sad and depressed. If the song is a happy beat and tone, the people might be happy within the

video.

• The score throughout the pop type music videos, usually depend on the song and the paste. If they

want the audience to feel slow and sad as they listen the score would reflect this and other

situations

1. Conventions and Codes within pop music video tends to go towards the camera angles at times.

These type of angles are close ups in order to show the emotion of the musical artist performing

their song through a music video. This is also usually to add meaning and effect to the video by

focusing on the artist's lips, eyes, mouth, etc.

2. In these music videos, the editing is always subject to the tone and they provide a clear picture

with professional work. The lighting for happy tone pop songs are usually very bright and have

high contrast. Usually in the editing of pop music videos, the shots are cut to follow the lyrics so

the audience can follow along.

3. These pop music videos also have diegetic sounds when it comes to them. Lots of the pop music

videos have a story and a message so it uses diegetic sound to capture that story. For example, if

the song is sad and they want to portray a sad setting they might have rain in the background.
